The waste management industry desperately needs a "Branson, Sugar, Trump or Murdoch figure" to lead the way, says Barry Van Danzig, chief executive of Wastelink. "We are lacking dynamic leadership", "we're steady, but dull", "we should be seeking true value for money", "as an industry we have over promised" and "we're a great industry - but we could be 10 times bigger" - all phrases that peppered a 45-minute interview. Since Barry Van Danzig formed Wastelink 14 years ago, he has lobbied the government about waste regulations, established his now £20m turnover business in a competitive market place and, more than likely, rubbed a few people up the wrong way. That's not to say that he's not a nice man - he's a very nice man in fact - but he does speak his mind. "The waste industry is the last unregulated free market utility in existence in the UK. It is an essential utility providing an adequate service. It has improved, but it is still lacking the dynamic leadership such an industry needs to move on to the next level," he says.
