Textile recycling in this country is in a perilous state. Most local authorities are ill equipped to meet the legislative challenges currently facing the kerbside collection of textiles and falling prices for rags are having a detrimental effect. CRN recently hosted a major seminar to discuss this and examine the ethical implications of selling to developing countries. Experts from the Textile Recycling Association, Oxfam, the Association of Charity Shops, Manchester-based Emerge Recycling and the Italian reuse scheme IDEAmbiente spoke about the local and global implications of textile recycling today. Representatives from across the sector, from kerbside collectors through to charity shops and merchants, discussed the pressures and opportunities available for the future development of a notoriously unpredictable market.
