Since the closure of Nobel Enterprises' (previously ICI) combined heat and power (CHP) plant, the company needed an alternative disposal route for up to 600 tonnes of nitrocellulose waste per annum. The nitrocellulose waste material is a byproduct of the industrial nitrocellulose process operated by Nobel Enterprises at Ardeer in North Ayrshire. This is a biodegradable special waste with no suitably licensed disposal sites nearby. At the same time, North Ayrshire Council was collecting 8,000 to 10,000 tonnes of garden refuse per annum, with landfill traditionally being the main disposal route. In line with landfill reduction targets and commitments to sustainable development, the council needed alternative disposal methods.
