摘要

As reported in last month's, Wastes Management, drugs litter continues to be a massive and worrying problem - especially for those charged with cleaning it up. But at least councils, police and drugs action teams are now talking about the issue and accepting it's something that affects us all, which is why they met in Bristol recently to share ideas and swap best practice. The day began with ENCAMS' Chief Executive, Alan Woods, reminding delegates of the results of a nationwide survey showing the human cost of the problem. A reported 200 people a year were injured by drugs needles, about 20 of them children. Eighty nine per cent of councils were aware of discarded needles on their land, with the majority of those having discovered in excess of 20 needles in one area. The main areas in which 'sharps' have been discovered are parks, playing fields and public toilets - but even cemeteries and abandoned cars are used as a dumping ground.
