According to the media, Blackpool is about to banish 'tack'. Saucy plastic gifts, naughty postcards and suggestively shaped sticks of rock are out and a more sophisticated, family-friendly (and for that matter, sustainable) approach, complete with beach zoning and continental-style water sports are on the way in. This decision has made waves and split opinion. While some can't wait to kiss goodbye to the Lancashire town's tired old image, others have accused those running the resort of being 'seaside spoilsports' who have kicked sand in the face of revellers. But there's one improvement that has definitely received a universal 'thumbs up' - the dramatic transformation of Blackpool's beach - a stretch of sand which is now so clean and well-managed that, for the first time ever, it will be flying the yellow and blue Seaside Award flag this summer. That means it has water clean enough to pass strict EU laws and top-notch facilities, including clean toilets. Dogs are also controlled properly and health and safety made the number one priority.
