Engagement with the waste management industry began in October 2004 with the establishment of a forum comprising Energy & Utility Skills and industry employers in order to establish priorities and drive a work plan which will enable the development of training appropriate to the future needs of the waste management industry. The government has committed to find funding to support sector skills agreements (designed to deliver action to meet priority skills needs that will drive improved business performance) if enough employer support and commitment is achieved.
