January and February have been anything but quiet and it looks likely that this will be the shape of things to come throughout 2003. In the third annual report on quality of life and sustainable development, the Secretary of State for the Environment, Margaret Beckett MP, announced that whilst the UK is making progress in a number of areas (recycling levels being one) there is still "a lot to do" in other areas (e.g. increasing waste arisings). Margaret Beckett has hardened her position on over-production and over-consumption by announcing that she would develop a strategy for sustainable growth, to be prepared in the form of a national outline plan by the summer. She promised the action to help curb the throw-away consumer culture in an effort to make a more eco-friendly economy.
