If you think that house prices in the UK are exorbitant, then be thankful you don't live in Japan. The country is about the same size as the UK, but only a fifth is habitable - and home to the majority of its 127 million-strong population. The struggle for space has pushed Japanese land prices through the roof. It comes as no surprise, therefore, that landfill in Japan is also at a premium. You can't waste precious space on rubbish; landfill has to be avoided at all costs. This single driving factor has had a remarkable effect on industry, especially in the electronics and electrical goods sectors, which cater to the insatiable Japanese appetite for high-tech gadgetry.
