The birth of the bottle bank system began when Stanley Race, then President of the Glass Manufacturing Federation, deposited an empty jam jar into the first public bottle bank at Tesco's car park, Wombwell Lane, Barnsley, on 24 August 1977. Stanley, now 85, paved the way for 23 billion jars and bottles to be recycled over the next quarter of a century - saving enough energy to launch nearly 40 space shuttle missions. Today there are more than 50 000 bottle banks around the UK, with around 587 000 tonnes of glass being recycled every year.
