Conference week 2002 seems a lifetime away now, and was just one of many highlights of the Presidential year. The week was a whirlwind of activity, including meetings, receptions, dinners and lunches. Another high point of the summer was attending a Garden Party at Buckingham Palace, a somewhat surreal experience. Where else would you see so many people dressed in their finery, queuing for sandwiches and tea, and then crowding to see Her Majesty before wandering around the beautiful grounds of the Palace eating ice creams? In September I travelled to Harrogate for the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health dinner and to London for the annual dinner of the Institution of Civil Engineers. I was also able to attend the re-launch party for Wastes Management, held in the vaults of the Royal Society of Arts in London. With further visits to the North East and Welsh Centres, my Presidential year was certainly getting into its stride.
