A vital part of CIWM's role has to be increasing awareness of waste generation among waste producers large and small. As part of the Annual Conference and Exhibition, the latest initiative, the Waste Awareness Certificate, a training programme for waste producers to be rolled out countrywide, was launched in the opulent surroundings of Oldway Mansions, the family home of the Singer sewing machine dynasty. The Certificate has been developed with support from University College Northampton, DEFRA, the DTI, SITA, WRAP and the Environment Agency. The Waste Awareness Certificate is awarded on completion of a five-hour course, subject to passing a short final test. Mike Philpott, Chief Executive of CIWM, expressed his support for the initiative: "The Institution has created a training programme which is designed to make people who tackle waste think about what they are doing, and encourage recycling and waste minimisation."
