This article deals with the assessment of risks posed to people, water, flora and fauna and other receptors by sites affected by contamination. It reviews the policy and technical aspects of determining and evaluating the risks that contamination can present. The first article in the series (page 20, September issue of Wastes Management) described risk management and how to select the most appropriate technology(ies) for any specific site. The second article (page 49, October issue of Wastes Management) dealt with the investigation of potentially contaminated sites and the development of the conceptual model.
