I have been much taken by the concept of corporate social responsibility (CSR) as a means whereby progressive companies can exhibit their employment, environmental and societal responsibilities and still compete effectively in the commercial market. There are, however, those amongst us that would claim that CSR is not an opportunity for the manufacturing and retailing industry to make a truly philanthropic gesture but is being used as a cynical means of promoting the company and brand. In its purest sense, CSR is an indication of an organisation's commitment to the community, environment, business ethics, human rights, its workforce and the marketplace. Many companies are undertaking these responsibilities as part of their daily regime, in some cases they contribute directly to improved communications, recruitment or financial performance, while in others they are a response to legislative demands.
