This article is adapted from the executive summary of a technical monograph 'Understanding Recycling Behaviour, Volume 2'. It outlines research work produced between January 2001 and June 2003 at the University of Paisley, under the Newspaper Industry Environmental Technology Initiative, sponsored by Bridgewater Paper Company Ltd, Cheshire Recycling, Stora Enso and Sun Chemical. The new research presented extends and complements that previously published in Volume 1, summarised in the May 2001 issue of Wastes Management. The latest research includes two new household waste behaviour and attitude surveys carried out in Scotland, in the districts of Renfrewshire and Clackmannanshire respectively. It also includes detailed statistical analyses of recent kerbside recycling data from Chesterfield and North East Derbyshire, from North Warwickshire, and from the 14 districts of the county of Lancashire. In the course of the research, some 500 new household surveys have been carried out, and the performances of more than 130 separate kerbside collection rounds have been analysed in detail. The central research thrusts were to diagnose and explain monitored recycling performances - are they above or below expectations? Why is this the case? - and to develop a better understanding of what causes behavioural change.
