The waste hierarchy of reduction, re-use and recycling is universally accepted as a good thing. There are many reasons for this, starting with the protection of human health and the environment. Numerous major stakeholders, including the EU and national governments, through to local authorities, are fully committed to delivering on the hierarchy. There is, however, one small section of the waste management industry that turns the waste hierarchy on its head. When it comes to animal-based wastes, the reduction, re-use and recycling that was once the norm is no longer acceptable. The outcome is that many potentially useful materials are no longer recycled or re-used and society at large has to find alternative means of disposal and bear the cost. Conversely, the important benefits in terms of protecting health and the environment far outweigh the cost. In this context, companies which specialise in the management of animal-based wastes, including Vetspeed, are coming to the fore with the expertise and technology to incinerate a wide range of these wastes. There is also a role for mass burn incinerator operators and renderers, when large volumes of carcasses or animal-based products are involved. And all this follows the Landfill and Animal By-Products Directives.
