Elaine Lockley and Dr. Jane Beasley report on a ground-breaking waste scheme at a young offenders institution in the Midlands. Mention Her Majesty's Prison Service and the most likely debate that will ensue is one focused on privatisation, overcrowding or treatment of prisoners. It is less likely that thoughts will turn to waste management practices. Waste and its management is one of the main environmental issues now being addressed by HMP Service, however, and with rising costs associated with waste collection and disposal, an aim to reduce the amount of waste generated and to recover value through re-use and recycling has now been set. To drive this forward, the Service has set up its own waste management and recycling team with responsibilities for carrying out waste audits of all prison sites. To date, almost 100 sites have been audited and this has resulted in the development of operational waste management units at 25 site, with more units being planned at an additional 17 prisons.
