Since the 1970s, Oxfordshire County Council has operated a successful household waste management strategy based almost entirely on secure long-term contract landfill sites. Sites were managed to good standards when measured against the standards prevailing at any time. Substantial areas of mineral workings were successfully restored in the County by landfilling with household waste. As a consequence, landfill remained an acceptable and relatively uncontroversial waste management option for household waste in Oxfordshire.
