At present, most Brazilian cities have a weak profile in terms of urban solid waste management. Most of the residues still go to open dumps (see Figure 1), 30% of the municipalities don't have any kind of waste collection, and over 65% have a service that covers less than 100% of the population. In terms of kerb-side collection and recycling, the situation is no better: just 2.5% of municipalities have kerbside collection and the national average for recycling urban solid waste is around 3% (by weight).
