In a letter to the IWM , the DTI has confirmed that in the event of fuel shortages in the forthcoming weeks, waste collection and disposal will continue to be designated as a 'priority use' with priority access to fuel, in the event of significant actual reductions in oil fuel avail-ability. The designation will trigger priority access to fuel stocks under the arrangements explained below. The designation may be statutory under the Energy Act 1976, or non-statutory based on voluntary action by the oil industry, as with the case during September. However, the DTI have also stated that it is important that waste management companies prepare contingency plans to prioritise their need for fuel in the event of serious supply disruption.
