摘要

A battery recycling service focusing on rechargeable lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) has been launched by UK firm First Mile. LIBs are found in many everyday electrical items, such as mobile phones, laptops, electric scooters, bikes, cars and vans. According to the International Energy Agency, two million tonnes of used LIBs will be generated across the world each year by 2030. But, as the batteries proliferate, industry experts have sounded a note of caution regarding where, and how, they will be disposed of safely. Bruce Bratlcy, CEO and founder of First Mile, said: 'At First Mile, we know from our own green fleet just how much of a positive difference switching to electric vehicles can have on the environment, but it's vitally important that green intentions are maintained throughout the life-cycle of a product." Under the scheme, First Mile can provide LIB collections of up to 30kg from UK businesses, with fees calculated as a cost per kg basis. All batteries collected by First Mile will be responsibly stored and safely transported to specialist recycling facilities in Europe. Advanced recycling processes will then recover valuable materials from the batteries, such as aluminium, copper and nickel.
