Unless immediate action is taken by governments and industry, annual flows of plastic into the ocean could nearly triple by 2040, a new report has warned. Breaking the Plastic Wave: A Comprehensive Assessment of Pathways Toward Stopping Ocean Plastic Pollution, by The Pew Charitable Trusts, in partnership with Systemic, criticised the lack of a coherent global strategy to solve the crisis. It said plastic pollution was the by-product of fundamental flaws in a 'linear plastic system' in which 95 per cent of aggregate plastic packaging value -between $80-120bn a year - is lost to the economy following a short first-use cycle. Without major action, 50kg of plastic would enter the ocean for every metre of shoreline by 2040, the report said. But the authors say a future with around 80 per cent less annual plastic leakage into the ocean, relative to business as usual, was achievable by 2040 using existing technologies. This would benefit communities, governments and industry, but achieving it would depend on the immediate, ambitious and concerted global implementation of solutions across the entire plastics value chain. Dame Ellen MacArthur, founder and chair of trustees of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, said: "We must eliminate the plastics we don't need, and drastically reduce virgin plastic use. We need to innovate to create new materials and business models based on reuse and refill systems. And we need improved infrastructure to ensure all plastics we use are circulated in the economy and never become waste pollution.'
