The largest independent bottler of Coca-Cola has announced funding for a start-up developing a process to enable low-grade plastic polymer waste to be recycled. Low-grade PET is typically downcycled, incinerated or sent to landfill. But depolymerisation recycling technologies, such as that developed by start-up CuRe, can allow the material to be recycled and used again. The process could help to significantly increase the supply of recycled 'rPET available for manufacturers, accelerating the transition to a circular economy. The funding from Coca-Cola European Partners (CCEP) will enable CuRe to accelerate its 'polyester rejuvenation' technology from pilot to commercial readiness, supporting CCEP's ambition, in partnership with The Coca-Cola Company in Western Europe, to eliminate virgin oil-based PET from its PET bottles within the next decade. This will contribute to removing more than 200,000 tonnes of virgin oil-based PET from CCEP's output every year.
