摘要

While the pandemic continues to devastate communities in all corners of the world, almost two-thirds of the planet's population also view climate change as a global emergency. This is according to The People's Climate Vote', the largest opinion poll on tackling climate change, conducted by the United Nations Development Programme in conjunction with Oxford University. Around 1.22 million people took part in the survey, distributed through adverts in mobile gaming apps across 50 countries between October and December last year, with more than half the participants aged between 14 and 18. In the UK, 81 per cent of participants saw climate change as an emergency while, in the US, it was 65 per cent - a number that new President Joe Biden can take some comfort in as he tries to reverse the tide of scepticism encouraged by his predecessor. Overall, younger people were more likely to hold the view that rising temperatures were an emergency, with nearly 70 per cent agreeing. This seems to demonstrate young people's growing concern for the environment and the planet's finite resources - so it is no coincidence that our first magazine of 2021 is a 'youth issue'.
