The Covid-19 pandemic has been a brutal stress test for many, but in the midst of this tragedy our industry has transformed itself overnight, requiring a high level of collaboration and teamwork to deploy new models of working under strict government and safety guidelines. Faced with these new working realities, we will need to show the same levels of innovation agility and enterprise to ensure the UK becomes a global leader in resource management and that it continues to address the challenges of climate change to reach net zero. I believe we can achieve both these ambitions, but the steps we take in the near future will be critical. We need to start scaling up by investing more in low-carbon infrastructure and technology, supported by government policy and funding. As the Climate Change Committee's recent Sixth Carbon Budget report sets out, good progress has been made in decarbonising waste over the past three decades. The challenge is to go further by meeting the committee's nine recommendations for the sector, and scaling up our investment in low-carbon infrastructure and technology within the UK.
