Leading chewing-gum producers have been united by the government in a £10m -partnership to remove gum litter from Britain's streets. The scheme's participants include Mars Wrigley, GlaxoSmithKline and Perfetti Van Melle, and it will be managed by independent charity Keep Britain Tidy. Chewing-gum litter costs millions of pounds of taxpayers' money every year, according to Defra, with the annual clean-up cost estimated at £7m. Research by Keep Britain Tidy suggests that 87 per cent of England's streets are stained with gum. The investment, starting later this year, will be used to clean up gum-litter stains, and deploy behavioural interventions to encourage people to bin their gum. Previous pilots have reduced gum littering by up to 64 per cent, Defra said.
