Regardless of the often poor public image of recycling it is an important aspect of clean technology. The vehicle dis-mantlers with their unsightly mountains of rusting cars are but one of the visible signs of recycling in the public mind. On the other side of the coin, the "rag and bone man" of old in England with his horse and cart calls up an image of a golden age when waste and scrap were collected and reused. Of course the reality lies somewhere in between but recycling has enormous potential to make a significant impact on the reduction of waste. A low-tech way of efficiently recycling manufactured waste is the waste exchanges that have been set up around the World. These are organised by government agencies, NGOs and private firms and they are making a significant impact in reusing waste streams. The internet has proved to be a driving force for the success of waste exchanges because it allows instantaneous access to details of the materials that are available. Obviously the most efficient exchanges take place regionally thereby minimising transport costs and effects, but it is amazing just how diverse the locations advertised on the web can be. For example on the Wastechange web site, looking at batteries available, one can see availability in Brunei, China, Malta, Northern Ireland and the USA to name just a few locations.
