Among Army leaders, there is a natural tendency to move in one direction with the rest of the force. According to Colonel Jon Drushal, commander of the 3d Chemical Brigade, "Some are scared to look backwards for fear of being accused of not looking forward. The fact remains that there are capabilities that were eliminated over the past decade that simply did not make sense in support of counterinsurgency operations and may make sense moving forward in support of joint combined arms operations." With the massive transition toward facing hybrid threats, the Army is in a perfect position to reevaluate obscuration and its role for the future. An honest evaluation will reveal that obscuration is irreplaceable. Technological advances and minor updates to the force structure will allow Army leaders to continue to keep looking forward to see obscuration as an asset that is well suited to address several future obstacles. With a greater investment in obscuration, the U.S. Army could enhance the ability to conduct combined arms maneuver and wide area security. NTC commanders are excited about integrating the smoke platoon into their missions, and they are seeking opportunities to employ mechanical obscuration into their schemes of maneuver. As the U.S. military reconditions itself for conventional warfare and hybrid threats, an expanded obscuration capability can only help.
