Richards Bay Coal Terminal (RBCT) has announced the surprising news that its coal exports were lower in 2007 than in 2006. Exports fell only slightly, from 66.47 mtpa to 66.15 mtpa, but the fall could have been much greater if the terminal had not chosen to run down its coal stockpiles, which stood at just 1.2 mt by the end of 2007. Just 64.7 mt was received at Richards Bay during the course of 2007, well below terminal handling capacity of 72 mtpa.

7. Commodity prices have risen sharply since 2006. This may benefit developing countries specialized on primary exports, but poverty may increase. Uruguay is a net exporter of primary products and a net importer of oil.
