The Queensland Government has announced a study into the expansion of Port Alma to become a coal exporter with a capacity of 30 mtpa. Premier Anna Bligh said that following detailed investigations into Port Alma's shipping channel and its potential dredging, CQPA and Xstrata Coal are investigating the potential for a massive expansion of the facilities, currently used for the importing of explosives and general cargo and exports of about 200,000 tonnes a year of general cargo.
