New legislation, which is due to come into affect in 2010, will allow only a single port in the Santa Marta-Cienaga region to handle export coal. In addition, enclosed conveyor belts will be the only permitted means of loading deepsea vessels; transhipment using barges will cease. These measures are being introduced because of perceived environmental damage suffered in the highly tourist area around Santa Marta, where present loading methods result in residue being washed up on beaches, dust being discharged into the air and pollution of offshore water taking place.
