Auto manufacturers have long made the claim that subjecting their products to the rigors of racing "improved the breed." It also didn't hurt that when those products won races the manufacturers could use that as a selling point.The Ford Thunderbird has a long competition history, and the MN-12 versions made from 1989 to 1997 made plenty of contributions to that record. During that time Ford routinely celebrated the triumphs in magazine and newspaper advertising that also served to promote Thunderbirds for the street, especially the supercharged Super Coupes.Thunderbirds first competed in NASCAR stock car races back in 1959 and '60. After getting reestablished in the series in the late Seventies, T-Birds built an increasingly enviable record through the "Aero Bird" era from 1983 through 1988. The MN-12-bodied Thunderbirds that followed racked up enough points to make Ford the man-ufacturers'-championship winner in 1992, '94, and '97.
