摘要

MOISTURE management can be defined as the ability of a fabric to absorb moisture from the skin and enable it to transport to the outer surface and eventually in to the atmosphere. Human body releases in excess of 50 to 60 ml of water under normal conditions even when there is no activity. While walking, the body warms up and sweats more which is more or less absorbed by fabric. This humidity needs to be transferred to the surface of the fabric for evaporation to produce a cooling effect. Therefore, to make the wearer feel comfortable, not only should the fabric evaporate the perspiration from the skin surface to the fabric surface but, the moisture should also get evaporated. Moisture adds weight to the fabric and makes the skin cold. Hence, it is very essential to have proper moisture management fabric. Human body has complex ways of maintaining temperature. In cold weather, the blood circulation in the armpit and legs is significantly reduced. When the body warms up, the blood circulation increases in an attempt to release excess heat there by emitting sweat. During perspiration, water (containing salt and other impurities) is transmitted through the pores of the skin from there on, it evaporates. Clothing protects humans — in accordance to the environment — from hot to cold. It is thus expected to fulfill the function without inhibiting the evaporation of humidity caused by perspiration (good moisture management), and thus not interfering with the temperature regulation of the body.
