The photophysics of dyes depend largely on the nature of the dyes as to whether it exists in the monomeric form or in the form of aggregates originating from the self-association of dyes in solution or at the solid-liquid interface which is a frequently encountered phenomenon in dye chemistry. The property of molecular association of dyes, in addition to the molecular structure, depends on the concentration and viscosity of the solutions, and temperature besides the other usual properties of solutions. Owing to strong intermolecular van der Waals-like attractive forces between the molecules. The aggregates in solution exhibit distinct changes in the absorption band as compared to the monomeric species. From the spectral shifts, various aggregation patterns of the dyes in different media have been proposed. The bathochromically shifted (or red shifted) J-bands (J for Jelly, one of the first workers who investigated these shifts) and hypsochromically shifted (or blue shifted) H-bands (H for hypsochromic) of the aggregates have been explained in terms of molecular exciton coupling theory, i.e., coupling of transition moments of the constituent dye molecules. The aggregates that exhibit J-bands in their absorption spectrum are called J aggregates and H aggregates exhibit these H bands.
