Microbial Dyes: A new dimension to natural dyes

The sense of color is as extended as the sense of life. Color is integral to the interface between people and nature. Humans have traditionally preferred natural sources to add colors to clothing and other essentials and utilities like food, cosmetics and medicines. Growing consumer interest in purchasing 'green' products, safety and environmental conservation has kindled the breakthrough force for reintroducing natural colorants into the modern markets. Conventionally used plant dyes have their own advantages and disadvantages. Low reproducibility of same shades, dependent on weather conditions, difficult transportation, high energy consumption for the extraction of dyes etc. in natural dyes has directed the interest towards microbial dyes. Microbial dyes have many advantages over artificial and other natural colors. One relates to fermentation, which is an inherently faster and more productive production compared to any other process. The other enduring strength of microbes is their relatively large and easily manipulated strands of genes. Microbial pigment production can be increased in geometric proportions through genetic engineering. Therefore, microbial dyes can provide new horizons to natural dyes.
