Increasing competition is forcing dyers to take advantage of any development that reduces cost and secures quality. Since labour is the biggest cost factor in textile processing and corrections are very expensive, the most important objectives are to reduce batch times and avoid corrections. Exhaust dyeing procedures are often still far from optimum. They are normally based on general recommendations given by the supplier and adjusted on the basis of experience. The same standard procedures are used to dye very different shades and types of goods. Important dyeing parameters, eg, the dyeing properties of the dyes, fibres and dyeing units are not often taken into account adequately. If the results are unsatisfactory, the dyer tends to solve the problem by introducing additional safety measures in to the procedure. To fulfill all requirements, additions are given, batch times are prolonged - while economic aspects are to some extent neglected.
