The field of Biomimetics involves the understanding of biological functions, structures and principles of various objects found in nature by biologists, physicists, chemists and material scientists, and the design and fabrication of various materials and devices of commercial interest by engineers, material scientists, chemists and others. Our ancestors looked to nature for inspiration and development of various materials and devices many centuries ago and hence could develop materials such as synthetic fibres, planes, etc. Different methods of fibre processing, fibre orientation and functional finishing are suitable for transferring such biological functions to technical textile products. Inspired by furs of the polar bear, artificial furs and textiles have been developed. Lotus leaf effect on water resistant and water proof materials, swim suits inspired from shark skin, chameolonic fabrics, irridescent textiles inspired from peacock feathers, etc. Biomimetics cannot and shall not replace the established and well tested approach. But, new developments, whenever possible and ingenious, should be simulated by solutions from nature and equalized with nature's wisdom, thus generating a pool of ideas and knowledge for further use. Technical textiles and fibrous composite materials offer a brilliant opportunity for transferring ideas inspired by biological models via biomimetic approaches into innovative technical structures.
