Organic materials play the key role in life. The occurrence and function of organic materials is as old as human civilisation. Almost all functionalities of organic materials for electronics and photonics are induced by electron based intermolecular interactions. These electronic and photonic phenomena have contributed much to the evolution of this earth. However in recent years we have started realising that we should have a scientific understanding of these phenomena. The evolution of physics around electrons as fundamental constituents of matter, light as electromagnetic radiation and the interaction between the electromagnetic radiation and materials have been responsible for whatever understanding we have today in the field of functional organic materials.
