The light fastness of dyed textile materials is one of the most important characteristics for ready-made goods. The light fastness of the dyed goods is evaluated by the rate of dye destruction in the fiber on exposure to an artificial light source which is similar to sun light. Factors affecting light fastness are the intensity and spectral composition of the light used for exposure, the spectral properties of dyed fiber, the dye concentration in the fiber, the dye reactivity, the state of the dye in the fiber, the nature of the bond between the dye and fiber, and the physical and the chemical constitution of the fiber. In combination shades, light fastness ratings are even lower than the lowest values of the individual dyes constituting in the mixture. Reactive dyes are becoming increasingly popular for dyeing cellulosic fibers because of their wide shade range, ease of application, and excellent wet fastness properties. However, these dyes are known to have poor perspiration and light fastness properties. The light fastness of different types of dyes on textile materials has been extensively discussed in a great number of technical papers, reviews, and monographs, while only little attention has been paid to the light fastness of reactive dyes.
