Garment exporters recently said they saw a 10% rise in outbound shipments in 2010-11 but cautioned against the adverse impact of allowing unfettered export of raw materials such as cotton and yarn on domestic apparel manufacturing industry, the second largest employment generator after agriculture.rn"We can say that the optimistic scenario is a 10% growth in apparel export...(but) the government must calibrate export of raw material which constitutes 55-60% of manufacturing cost," Premal Udani, chairman of Apparel Export Promotion Council, an umbrella body of garment exporters promoted by the textiles ministry, said.
