A study on the properties of natural and synthetic leathers used for apparels and accessories

摘要

Leather is a unique bio-fabric, which is obtained by converting the hides and skins of animals by the art of tanning. Leather has been used for functional, aesthetic and decorative purposes. Due to the demand and the increasing cost of natural leathers, synthetic leathers are been developed. Hence, an attempt has been made to compare the properties of natural and synthetic leathers used for apparels and accessories. The mechanical properties such as flexing endurance, tensile strength, bending length, stitch tear strength and elongation at break was analyzed. The bulk properties such as softness and drape were analyzed. The chemical properties such as pH, moisture content, shrinkage temperature and ash content were analyzed. The properties such as water repellency and air or water vapour permeability were assessed and correlated with scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results and discussion concluded that the natural leather (Sheep nappa and Cow calf) seem to possess the most important properties required for apparel and accessories application when compared to that of synthetic (PU and PVC) leathers.
