Improve the wash fastness of natural dyes on silk fabric

摘要

Washing fastness of natural colourants are comparatively low and here an attempt is made to improve the fastness properties with the help of mordants. Three natural colourants (Hibiscus flower, Onion skin and Eucalyptus bark) selected for dyeing silk fabric and fastness improved with the use of synthetic mordants: Alum, Copper sulphate and Potassium dichromate and Natural mordants: pomegranate rind and tannin. The dyeing was done at optimized conditions. Two and three combination of mordants were also tried. The silk fabric was premordants with different mordants. Natural mordants tannin pomegranate rind gave better improvement on fastness than synthetic mordants. The combination of these two natural mordants gave still better results. These natural colourants and mordants are very safe to environment.
