Substitution of hydrosulphite in natural indigo dyeing using natural ingredients

Indigo, the most popular dyestuff for the colouration of denims is a water insoluble dye, which is converted to its water-soluble leucoform using a reducing agent in presence of alkali. Conventional reducing agent i.e. sodium hydrosulphite is not environment friendly and therefore, various research work have been reported for the substitution of sodium hydrosulphite. In the present study a natural ingredients system is used to reduce both natural and synthetic indigo dye. Optimisation of concentration of natural ingredients viz, fenugreek, jaggery, lime and soda ash, was carried out. Cotton yarns were dyed at different concentrations of the indigo dyes using natural reducing system and the dye uptake was determined by extraction of dye with dimethylformamide. For comparison, cotton yams were also dyed with natural and synthetic indigo dye using sodium hydroxide and sodium hydrosulphite system. The results reveal that dye uptake with natutsl seducing spstem is about 25-30% Jess as compared to hydrosulphite system. Complete substitution of hydrosulphite by natural reducing system is not possible. The efficacy of the reducing bath for both the reducing systems was checked by measurement of redox potential of the blank baths.
