摘要

It is well known worldwide that processing of textiles is a polluting activity on account of use of dyes, chemicals and discharge of waste water. The waste water discharged by textile processing units ultimately leads to land and surface water. Any adverse impact of such waste water, ultimately reflects in surface water quality since rainwater carries all such harmful elements from land to surface water. Even ground water when pumped out, finally goes to surface water. Hence the quality, of waste water discharged by textile processing units will ultimately have impact on surface water quality. Since waste water from various type of activities (industrial and domestic) finally mixes with surface water, it is difficult to find out the impact of a specific activity, on the quality of surface water. This is the reason, no successful study could be conducted so far to assess the impact of a specific activity on surface water quality. Authors therefore adopted a different approach in which the pollutants discharged by textile processing units in India were ascertained and then the extent to which such pollutants are added in Indian surface water was established. Impact of various activities such as woven fabric processing, knit fabric processing and yarn processing was determined separately. Brief details of the study are given in this paper.
