摘要

A fabric made from 100% cotton and having twill construction (diagonal) is called denim. Traditional blue denim is a warp faced cotton fabric in a 3x1 twill construction. Coarse yarns of 6's-20's Ne are used for both warp and weft. The term warp means that more warp than weft yarn appear on the face of cloth, as a result denim fabric is bluer on the face and almost white on the back. The ratio of percentage of warp to percentage of weft is 3:2 with blue warp on the face. Warp is dyed with solid colour, usually indigo and weft left undyed. But with the advent of garment dyeing, denim is dyed in full spectra of colours, for example reactive, vat, sulphur etc. Denim fabric is manufactured in a different range of weights. Heavier clothing may be upto 14.5 oz/yd~2 and lighter clothes 6.5 oz/yd~2. As already stated 3x1 twill is the norm of classic denims, however a broken twill construction is also used by many manufacturers. Better quality denim is given a compressive shrinkage treatment, that is, sanforisation to minimize shrinkage during laundering.
