As mentioned earlier the main dye group for the dyeing of pure silk belongs to the acid/metal complex dyes. The dyeing process for silk using anionic dyes must be adapted to the dyeing behaviour of silk. Because of the high first strike of these dyes on silk it is advised to keep the temperature as low as possible at the beginning of the dyeing cycle in order to allow enough time for the dye to be evenly distributed on to the surface of the fibre or fabric. The dyeing temperature should also be adapted to the form of the goods and' the type of dyeing machine. For dyeing yarn which is less sensitive, higher dyeing temperatures of up to 80°-90℃ are advantageous for good penetration, but for some sensitive piece goods lower temperatures of 60-70℃ are recommended so as to avoid crush marks. Thanks to the good build up properties of many of the acid dyes and metal complex dyes, as long as low temperatures are used there is little chance of unsatisfactory dyebath exhaustion.
