The first article on this subject in this series, viz., Sci-Tech 52 was on detailed studies of the decomposition 6f sodium hydrosulphite in chemical pad liquor of continuous pad-steam vat dyeing, highlighting the need to check this by using partial substitutes. This installment is on the use of a liquid barrier between the oxidizing pad liquor surface and air to prevent the oxidative decomposition of the reducing agent system while it is prepared and kept standing for use in pad-steam vat dyeing. Studies on this novel approach was carried out by the author some time ago at ATIRA, Ahmedabad and the beneficial results were implemented at Sarangpur Mills, Ahmedabad, who have sponsored this work at a time sodium hydrosulphite's cost and supply position were critical. .Subsequently, the author has continued this work at Century Mills, Mumbai with further improvements resulting in substantial savings of sodium hydrosulphite in continuous vat dyeing of green and brown shades that were running round the clock. Although a patent was granted to the company with the author as the main inventor, this work was presented as a paper at a joint technological conference of TRAs and a paper published in Colourage, both without giving due credit to the author. Both these papers failed to give any vital data of the research studies behind this successful work. This paper provides such data on the beneficial use of immiscible liquids of specific gravity less than that of water to facilitate formation of top barrier layer in hydrosulphite systems.
