Exactly a half Century ago, an innovative textile chemist and Head of Textile Department of the Shri Ram Institute for Industrial Research, Delhi, the late Dr. V. B. Chipalkatti created a kind of revolution by converting pilot plant of fluidized bed, normally used for chemical reactions, to textile applications. The technique of fluidized bed was studied for dyeing and finishing with considerable success. The idea to use fluidized bed for dyeing evolved from the success of molten metal method for dyeing, which was successfully employed for several years in India and other countries for continuous dyeing. Rapid continuous dyeing, fifty years ago, had several difficulties as only surface dyeing resulted. There are two factors in rapid continuous dyeing. One is rapid diffusion of the dye into the fibre and the other is their fixation within the fibre. Pad, steam fix technique for direct dyes was not very successful. Reactive dyes were not developed then and the pad-batch technique was not very success-ful with other available dyes.
