摘要

India has a very rich heritage of dyeing arts and crafts. The mention of finery of Indian textiles is found in foreign literature also. In ancient times, India enjoyed monopoly in the production of naturally dyed, printed and painted textiles. The natural dyeing industry not only in India but globally suffered a major setback with the accidental discovery of synthetic dye 'mauveine' in 1856. Gradually on realising the carcinogenic and polluting effect of synthetic dyestuffs various eco-bans came into existence. Therefore, recently revival of interest in natural dyes has been conspicuous globally. The use of natural dyes has now been diverted towards synthetic fibres because of limited possibility of increasing the production of natural fibre to meet the clothing needs of growing popula-tion. Hence, in the present study an attempt has been made to optimise the process of dyeing polyester with Syzyglum cumini bark employing synthetic mordants.
