摘要

The story of silk goes back to more than 7000 years to China where it was kept as a well guarded secret and treasured as Gold. It was a trade secret for centuries and the trade route to Europe from Asia was known as the "Silk Route". China is still the foremost in terms of quantum of silk production followed by India with a production averaging about 80,000 tons per annum approximately. In India the production of silk is carried out mainly in the following states: Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir. It is an ideal industry complementing agriculture and hence offers ample scope for the increase in incomes of the agriculturists and thereby increase their living standards. Hence the governments of these states attach great importance to this Industry known as sericulture. The increase in employment of the people engaged in sericulture is always welcome in a country like India. The contributions of technicians and research organizations in the advancement of this industry is always welcomed. India hopefully should plan this sector more scientifically from pure agro type industry to an organised one and take up the production to higher volumes over a period of 5 years to 90-1 lac tons/annum.
