After deliberating on various factors connected with soiling and soil-release in fabrics in the last two installments Dr. G.P. Nair commences his own studies aimed at preparing a suitable soil-release agent in this installment. The first step in the multi-step preparation of such an agent, viz., a tailor-made sulphomethylated polyacrylamide is described.Even today, hydrophilic polymeric compounds form the backbone of many functional finishes for polyester and blended fabrics as well as cotton knits to confer on these important attributes like wear comfort, anti-static and soil-release. The soil-release finishing compound, preparation of which is under discussion in this paper, will have all these attributes besides possessing durability due to it being reactive and non-stiffening due to its low molecular weight, less quantity needs and more uniform distribution.
